Once again Morley is taking park in the Britain in Bloom 2009 competition. However it is not withou a few snags when the production company of ITV's Emmerdale Farm while filming outside Morley Town Hall, the cast and crew flattened a flower bed while shooting a scene for a future episode.
With the In Bloom competition judges due within three weeks, green-fingered committee members were none too happy - and wrote to producers to tell them so. Now, they have received an apology and a cheque for £100 to support the Morley In Bloom effort.
Committee member Elaine Mason witnessed the scene - where one actor is pushed into the flowerbed - and complained to producers. She said: "I was coming out of Morrisons when I saw them filming this fight. They didn't just do it once they did it five times."
By the end the flowers were all crushed and some had come up by the root. I spoke to one of the managers on set and she said they would put it right. But the next day I went myself and replanted it. I managed to rescue most of them. It doesn't look too bad now."
Mrs Mason wrote to producers of the Yorkshire TV soap and said she was "thrilled" to receive the £100 cheque back in return. She said: "It's great. We will use it to buy a lot of plants for the town centre."
In Bloom judges are set to descend on the town on Friday and will tour the area looking for top-quality displays. The Morley In Bloom
committee is hoping to score highly and has mobilised local businesses, shops and even the fire service and police. Morley police station has created its own display, using spiky plants it says can help deter burglars.
Businesses have put out planters and hanging baskets and thousands of bulbs have been planted in the town, especially at the main gateways.Schools have also got involved through poster competitions to advertise the effort.
Morley in Bloom chairman and city councillor Judith Elliott said: "The town is looking beautiful. It's all come together really well. Fingers crossed we'll get a good score from the judges because everyone has worked tremendously hard."
An Emmerdale spokesman said: "We wish Morley the best of luck in their In Bloom competition."
